Review
A group who define themselves as 'Gravedigger Metal' - you can perhaps understand my initial skepticism when I first had this album in my hands to review; nonetheless, this is an image that the band take very much so 'tongue-in-cheek', and so becomes easier to take on board.
From the moment that I put the album in my player and started to listen, my initial thought was "Nightwish. This sounds very much so like old Nightwish" . The vocal stylings are different, but the musical style and high-end level of production is certainly on par!
Perhaps the most unique and indeed initially shocking part of this album is the lyrical content - for this is where any similarity to the aforementioned band comes to a deathly halt. The entire album is about death in one way, shape or form - whether about murderers gone mad, gruesome tales of beheading, evil monsters that lurk deep below the surface or a tragic tale of a man fighting to stay alive to avenge the death of his love, this album has it all! Yet thrown into the miss-match of death and pain is a cover version of the classic Oldfield track, "Moonlight Shadow" - and I believe its correct to say that this is better even than the original!
The production of the album is top notch and cannot be flawed on any level. The quality of the musicians shine through on every single track, and have been balanced so perfectly that even the now-legendary Nightwish could learn a thing or two from this jolly bunch of undertakers.
If I could add a negative to balance out this review I would, but even after repeating the CD over and over to try and find a flaw, this feat was soon proved to be impossible. This CD is a must for fans of Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil and Epica!
